There they sat
pristine beauty tied with a silk ribbon
upon a bench
abandoned flowers

a bouquet
roses, orchids, jasmine, ylangylang
feathered fronds and baby’s breath peeking out
a panoply of colors
and scents blending
intriguing in its rareness of blossoms
mysterious in its being there unattended

were they a memory of love?
an unfinished visit to a gravestone?

perhaps a memory of love’s loss
a hope that was dashed
to be left
with the dreams of the life
that would no longer be

they sat there
as did i
and i looked at them
and pondered
in the twilight
of the empty park

had they been a part
of a girl joining a convent?

had they been a gift
to a cherished relative?

or some special whim
of one smitten
in the spur of the moment?

so exotic
so sublime
so intense
yet
still
forgotten
left there
on a park bench
abandoned
flowers
