white wish clock
He was running in the playground
I had put streamers on his wrists
But it was lunchtime
He came to me with tears in his eyes
Begging me not to throw out the streamers
In complete sentences
A three year old boy
Who seldom used more than three words at a time
And I stopped
Why was he crying?
Where were all these words and tears coming from?
So I asked him and he replied,
“I want to feel like a butterfly
and fly in the wind.”
He was not crying
He was having a dream
Touching something so huge it brought tears to his eyes
And I saw his dream and it was as beautiful as the words
Bigger than any thoughts he’d ever shared before
So beautiful I cried as I hugged him
And I let him be a butterfly
The two stood talking
one with intent to give the child security
one with intent to do what the law expected
they hit a security concern
“I am not going to risk my life!”
and I wondered
why not risk your life?
that child has never had a life
isn’t giving that child a life
worth the rest of yours
an adult whose life is already jaded?
